Custer was born in Ohio. He became a hero during the Civil War. He was a
daring cavalry officer, who won the temporary rank of major general.
After the war, he was a lieutenant colonel with the Seventh Cavalry. He
led the first military expedition into the Black Hills. He had two main
tasks. He was to look for a place to build a new fort. He was also to
see if there was gold in the Black Hills. The expedition took nearly
sixty days. The gold he found led to the war that killed him. The
Lakotas (Sioux) did not want more people in their lands. Custer died on
June 25, 1876, at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, or Greasy Grass.
